Matcha Donuts

So here's post numero dos for the month of January. Matcha Donuts. I decided on donuts because they honestly don't take a ton of time. I think they look cooler than cupcakes and everything can be made by hand. It's also really easy to whip up a donut glaze so thats why I went with these donuts. I also like how you can customize donuts without using any special piping tips. I went with more natural toppings instead of sprinkles. I tried to use toppings that I knew went well with Matcha like almonds, raspberries, coconut, and white chocolate. A lot of these flavor combinations mimic the ones used in the previous Matcha Croissant post. Overall I think the donuts look great and the only special equipment needed is a donut pan which you can get your local craft store or Amazon.

Here's what you are going to need;

Matcha Donuts

  • 1 ½ C flour
  • 2/3 C sugar
  • 2 tablespoons matcha green tea powder
  • ¾ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 C sour cream
  • ¾ C  milk
  • ½ tsp almond extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted melted butter (cooled to room temperature)
Matcha Glaze
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of matcha powder
  • 3-5 tablespoons of milk (start with three and add to reach desired consistency)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a standard doughnut pan.

Combine dry ingredients (flour through salt) in a large bowl.

In a small bowl, whisk together egg, melted butter, sour cream, milk and vanilla.

Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and whisk until just combined.

Transfer ingredients to a piping bag and pipe into molds, filling ¾ of the way up.

Ready to bake

Bake at 350F on the center rack of the oven for 10-14 minutes, or until a tooth pick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, turn out onto a wire rack and allow to cool completely. Repeat with remaining batter.

To make the Matcha glaze just mix powdered sugar, matcha and milk until you reach your desired consistency.

Matcha Glaze

Dip each donut in the glaze and add any toppings before glaze sets.

Overall these look yummy and I'm glad we are halfway into our Matcha month. Next post will be Black Sesame Macarons with a Matcha filling or Matcha white chocolate chip brownies. I'm not sure yet.
